Phytosanitary wood, fumigated wood – what is it?

Drewno fitosanitarne drewno fumigowane

Phytosanitary timber is also referred to as phytosanitary approved timber, fumigated timber or IPPC-certified timber. All terms refer to pest-free wood. There are two ways of removing them: The wood is treated with heat or with chemicals called fumigants. Colloquially, the term fumigated wood is used to refer both to wood that has been treated with heat and wood in which pests are killed with chemicals. Formally, however, fumigated wood is only that which has been treated with fumigants. Until recently, methyl bromide (CH2Br2) was a commonly used pest control agent in wood. It is now being replaced by other substances due to its side effects (causing the greenhouse effect). Fumigation is very effective in controlling pests in wood. The fumigation process has no effect on the quality and properties of the wood.

The wood we use is fumigated at 56° for 30 minutes per cm of thickness.

Phytosanitary fumigated wood – application

Phytosanitary approved wood is used for the production of transport packaging such as wooden crates, transport pallets, wooden trusses, wooden platforms or drums. Fumigated wood packaging is necessary for transporting goods outside the European Union. Disinfected wood must be marked accordingly. It bears the IPPC logo resembling an ear of grain and information on how the wood has been protected.

Materials made of processed wood (plywood, chipboard) do not have to undergo the fumigation procedure.
